Well to answer the the first part in reference to lineage:
I used to have my lineage information written down. It wasn't very important to my reiki master and it has even become much less to me. The claims of some Reiki Masters lineage seem to be biological and historically impossible but it makes them feel better and that’s what counts I guess (to them). I was taught the classic American Usui Reiki methods by a direct descendent of lineage of Usui through the Mrs. Hawayo Takata branch. It isn't that impressive Takata was after all a compulsive liar and one of the other Usui's students killed himself. But the biggest issue I have with the whole lineage thing is that Usui didn't invent Reiki, the use of universal life energy to facilitate healing goes back to before the written word (Research Tibetan and ancient Indian deities and their attunement process. Usui studied Tibetan Buddhism). Usui says he discovered Reiki, but I think that is like me saying at five years old I discovered ice cream! Lots can be lost in translation from Japanese to English, especially back in the 1800's. However, Usui did bring it into an easy to follow system that seems to be devoid of dogma. Thank gawd his devotees brought back the dogma and religious hierarchy. We seem to be lost without it.
I also love that Usui devoted his life to this work and was a true master.
I don't think Usui attunements really live past the second generation and Reiki masters marketing that they are somehow more attuned and can give better teaching seem to be cashing in on a cheap marketing ploy to build brand rather than to actually help a student be their highest expression. Especially sinice Usui is now dead, you can contact him directly during meditation and request an attunement in person. I've done this it was great, and you can too! (for free)
My lineage is really screwy now. I have also traded attunements with other Reiki Masters / energy workers who make no claim to the Usui lineage. I’m very slutty when it comes to trading attunements and energy work with other masters. I have also been struck on the forehead, by lightening, while meditating on the top of Cathedral Rock in Mt. Charleston. I have an eye witness and yes it was wonderful. I buzzed for a week! Best Attunement EVER! I’ll re-post that story at some point.
During Seminars for my massage therapists I give the classic style Usui Reiki attunement. That way they have it for marketing purposes. The Seminars are setup to teach what is considered traditional and nontraditional techniques so they can bring the techniques they learn into their practice the next day. You can pay me money and I can hand you a piece of paper and do an attunement and POOF you are Reiki Practitioner. But we all know that it is your commitment to the work, your willingness to be present and do the work, that make YOU GREAT. I have very little to do with it.
The second part of your question:
Symbols during attunements, I use them when I am doing classic Usui training seminars for the massage therapists. Everyone seems to want something that is marketable. I teadch them to my Reiki Masters and Level 2 students.However, when I am doing healing attunements on videos and during sessions, I do not really use symbols (healing attunements are for the purpose of healing and balancing the person it is being performed on, rather than making someone an actual practitioner). I give healing attunements out like candy. Because they are yummy!
How do you pass an attunement without symbols? Simple, it is very much like saying hello without speaking. When you figure out how to say hello to a good friend without speaking then you can do it too!
We are at an interesting time, very pivital, we are all starting to live from our hearts in a much larger way. But in order to do that the heirarchy and lineage thing has to be a non-priority. It will be interesting to see over the next few years how that all changes and flows.
